Young Learners and Teenagers
Building bridges and finding common ground in TEYLs

In many global contexts, the pedagogies used in English lessons in pre-schools, primary and secondary schools remain completely separate from the language-driven approaches found in out-of-school English courses delivered by private providers. The 2019 Pre Conference Event aims to identify common ground and build bridges to enable TEYL practitioners to emulate and integrate best age appropriate practice from both worlds.

We will kick off with an opening plenary by Janet Enever who will focus on early years (ages 2 – 5) and primary (ages 6 – 10), ‘21st Century ELT for 3 – 10 year olds’. This will be followed with a second plenary by Dave Spencer focused on lower (ages 11 – 14) and upper secondary (ages 15 – 17), ‘(R)EVOLUTION: New ideas seeping into Secondary Education’.

The plenaries will be followed by four shorter YLT talks:
  • Early Years: Building bridges to the primary classroom: engaging early literacy practices by Joan Kang Shin & Luciana Fernandez
  • Primary: Primary learning: borrowing the best from ELT and the mainstream by Shelagh Rixon & Amanda Davies
  • Lower Secondary: Making English your own: developing ELF-aware lower secondary students by Dirk Lagerwaard & Bruno Andrade
  • Upper Secondary: The next step: preparing upper secondary learners for the future by Leticia Moraes & Simon Pounder
After the YLT talks, delegates will be invited to participate in an open space format. During the open space, delegates will decide which age range team (early years or primary or lower secondary or upper secondary) they prefer to join according to their interests. This will offer delegates an excellent forum for deeper engagement with the speakers via Q&A.

We intend to wrap up the PCE with an interactive workshop facilitated by Virginia Parker, Tools for empowering learners and facilitating learning in TEYLs
